To figure out which rat and mouse repeller is better for use in a living room, an unprepared person may seem a daunting task. The fact is that today there are a lot of such devices on sale, and the price range for them is very significant - the cheapest devices cost about 500 rubles, while the price of the most expensive models can reach 10,000 rubles or more.
And what is surprising - the cheaper the device, the often more universal and even revolutionary properties are attributed to it by sellers. For example, an advertisement for the cheapest Chinese repellers promises not only quick disposal of rats and mice, but also any insects in the house. And everything would be fine, but only rodents do not react to such a dummy at all, and cockroaches are even ready to bask on it.
Therefore, before buying this or that rodent repeller, it is useful to first understand the features of the operation of these devices as a whole and understand what characteristics really reliable devices should have. We’ll talk more about this later, and we’ll not only consider the results of special experiments of various models of ultrasonic repellers of rats and mice, but also get acquainted with the feedback of those consumers who have already managed to test such devices in practice ...
Feedback
“From rats, we decided to buy such a small Chinese appliance. It seems to be inexpensive, they write that it works perfectly, it expels all pests and parasites from the house. Well, turned on, tried. It works, the light is on. But rats don't care! At night, again throughout the kitchen inherited. He worked for two weeks, the result is zero. And cockroaches even attacked him and settled under him. In short, the divorce is complete. Tell me, how much is a normal ultrasound repeller? ”

The main signs of an effective rodent repeller
Practice shows that if the repeller successfully drove away rats, for example, from your neighbor or relative, then with high probability you will get about the same effect. This is the case when you can not delve into the technical characteristics of the device, but just take it and use it for its intended purpose in your home.
On a note
But you shouldn’t fully rely on the positive reviews with which the Internet is replete with - the accuracy of the information in them is often doubtful, since today it has become “fashionable” to buy the so-called custom reviews to promote a particular product. And even if a person completely sincerely described his situation, it is far from always possible to be sure of the purity of the experiment - rats and mice could, for example, die from the poison that they had tried to use in the room before using the repeller.
Next, the price. As regards ultrasonic rodent repellers (as, incidentally, in many other cases), the rule works: the price more or less reflects the quality of the device and its effectiveness. All things being equal, the more expensive the repeller, the higher the likelihood that it will work, and vice versa.
This does not mean that all inexpensive repellers are certainly useless (although this is usually the case), and all expensive ones are necessarily “killer” drugs. There are rare exceptions, but in general it can be said that repellers with a price of less than 1000 rubles are mostly ineffective against rats and mice.
Now a few words about the technical characteristics of the devices, which are also very important - in fact, they reflect the capabilities of the repeller. Perhaps the first thing to keep in mind here is that the real characteristics of the repeller do not always correspond to what is stated in the device description.That is, in practice, in most cases, the device will scare away rats and mice slightly worse than what is written in the instructions.
Nevertheless, the fact of specifying individual technical characteristics already indicates that the manufacturer more or less responsibly approaches his product. This increases the likelihood that the device will still deter rats to some extent, which can not be said about some cheap models, which in the best case will indicate the duration of battery life.
So, what technical characteristics of rat and mouse repellers are useful to pay attention in the first place:
- The principle of operation - it is ultrasound devices that scare away rats successfully (the inefficiency of the so-called magnetic resonance and electromagnetic repellers of a “universal” action will be discussed below);
- Area protected from rodents - at a minimum, it should be larger than the area that you plan to protect from rats and (or) mice with the help of a repeller. It should be borne in mind that the intensity of ultrasound is greatly attenuated by interior items, especially carpets and upholstered furniture. For a repeller operating in a domestic environment, 400-800 sq. M can be considered the norm. m;
- Sound pressure level. Normal values are 80-120 dB;
- The frequency range - the wider it is, the better, but its lower limit should not be lower than 20 kHz (this is the audibility threshold for a person, that is, ideally you should not hear how the device works at all). In addition, effective rodent repellers work, as a rule, with a periodic change in the frequency of the generated ultrasound, which eliminates the addiction of rats and mice to a repelling device;
- Ultrasound radiation pattern - it shows how wide the device is capable of distributing ultrasound radiation around itself. The larger this value, the better. The best repellers have an ultrasound radiation pattern close to 360 ° (however, for many devices this parameter in the passport is overestimated, and the real value ranges from 120-270 °, which is also, in general, not bad).
On a note
It is useful to understand in general terms how the ultrasonic repeller of rats and mice works. This device produces quite powerful ultrasound, which the human ear does not perceive due to its very high frequency. But mice, rats, as well as pets can hear sounds with a frequency well above 20 kHz and feel discomfort from them at certain frequencies (by the way, this suggests that such devices are not entirely safe for cats and dogs, and certainly they can cause stress in hamsters and domestic mice).
As a rule, repellers produce ultrasound with a changing frequency, and from time to time fall into the frequency range in which screams of pain, fear or danger warnings are heard in rats and mice - these are the sounds that scare away rodents. At the same time, it makes no sense to look for a scarer that creates the sound of a cat (meowing or hissing) - it will most likely not scare either rats or mice.
Now let's list the signs of devices that are unlikely to help you scare off rodents:
- Electromagnetic or magnetic resonance principle of action. This also applies to devices that supposedly create a special electromagnetic field through the outlet in the electrical network of the house. Science today does not know the reasons why rats should be afraid of such repellers (and there is no evidence that these devices really create certain “fields” and scare away rodents, while there are plenty of negative reviews about the operation of such devices);
- Devices that make an audible sound (simply put, they constantly squeak). Effective and safe repellers of rats and mice generate ultrasound, that is, a sound that a person, in principle, cannot hear.If the device just beeps, it means that it does not work in the ultrasonic range, and this is most likely another fake (an exception is some fairly expensive bird repellers that can work in the ultrasonic and sound ranges);
- Statements about the versatility of the device - they say, it scares away rats with mice, and moles, and dogs, and even all domestic insects, from bugs to flies. Such universality is in principle impossible. What scares rats will not necessarily scare moles, and sounds terrible for mosquitoes are generally indifferent to cockroaches. Under the guise of universal repellers, absolutely useless devices are most often sold (but at an affordable price).
To summarize the preliminary result: an effective rodent repeller is certainly an ultrasonic device, and not the cheapest one. Below are the test results of a number of models and the rating of the most effective repellers that worked in real conditions on rats.
Test results for some instruments
Today published the data of several experiments conducted in different cities by laboratories at universities or research institutes in order to identify the most effective models of ultrasonic rat repellers among those on the market.
The essence of the tests was as follows: in a deserted room, heavily populated by rats (in particular, in an old pasta factory and in an empty grain warehouse), rodent bait was laid out on special converted traps for several days. The traps worked when the bait was eaten, but did not cause harm to the animals - this could accurately record the fact that the animals were enjoying the bait.
A few days later, the repeller turned on near the baits, and in the morning it was estimated how many traps worked - the more efficient the device scared off the rats, the less traps worked near it. The next time, another repeller was tested similarly, and so on. The results of the evaluations were compared, after which a peculiar rating of effectiveness was compiled.
According to the results of these tests, the rating of the most effective rat repellers is as follows:
- Chiston-2 missile defense;
- Biostrazh (also a device from the Chiston line);
- Chiston-2;
- TM-315;
The second group includes devices that, although they scare away rats, but which individual animals quickly get used to, or because of the narrow direction of ultrasound, animals in remote corners of the room do not pay attention to it at all. The devices in this group include:
- UZU-03;
- Spectrum.
- Tornado-800;
- Tsunami-2;
- KQ-200A (aka Banzai);
- Shield 01.
Also, about fifteen repellers tested showed very weak results, some of which did not affect rat behavior at all.
Let’s now take a closer look at the most effective repellers.
Ultrasonic repellers of chiston rats and mice
For all of these devices, the manufacturer declared a practically circular radiation pattern, a high level of sound pressure (from 110 dB at Chiston-2 to 130 dB at Biostrazh) and a relatively small protected area (from 90 sq. M. At Chiston-2 to 200 sq. M . at the Bioguard). At a minimum, this characterizes the devices on the good side: the manufacturer does not overestimate the parameters and does not try to attract the attention of the buyer with obviously incorrect statements.
All Chistons work from a 220V network, there are no battery-powered devices among them. They are produced by one company - TPK Chiston & K.
As for the price: Chiston-2 costs about 2300 rubles, Chiston-2 missile defense - 2700 rubles, Biostrazh - 4500 rubles.
TM-315 and its features
One of the most expensive rodent repellents on the market, the TM-315 is a device designed for industrial use.
This repeller generates sounds in three ranges:
- Ultrasound repelling rats and mice;
- Ultrasound repelling mosquitoes;
- As well as audible sounds to scare away birds (this is one of the few repellers that generates sound signals perceived by humans).
On a note
Thus, TM-315 is an exception to the rule that an effective rat and mouse repeller should work inaudibly for humans. In the mode of scaring away rodents, it really does not produce audible sounds, but rather loudly "makes noise" when scaring away birds. It is important to understand that making audible sounds, the device has almost no effect on rats, and in the ultrasonic emitter mode it does not scare away birds.
Switching the device between these modes is required manually.
The cost of TM-315 is about 11,000 rubles, its use is rational mainly at large industrial facilities.
Otpugivatel UZU-03
UZU-03 is in many respects similar to the previous devices and has similar characteristics. It costs about 2500 rubles, consumes 5 watts (powered by AC), is quite bulky, weighs 700 grams.
In principle, it is quite suitable for use at home.
Feedback
“I want to leave my review here about the UZU-03 repeller. The product is good, effective, we drove away the rats with it. The instruction is simple, you need to plug it into an outlet and select a mode. The only negative is the large size, you just can’t put it under the bedside table, it should be in the open. But if everything is done correctly, then the rats leave. The repeller completely satisfied us, despite the high price. "
Anna, St. Petersburg
Tornado repellers (including models 400 and 800), Spectrum, Tsunami in their characteristics are close to UZU-03, but in some cases their effectiveness may be slightly lower.
Banzai KQ-200A
Banzai KQ-200A is another rather expensive repeller (its price is about 8000 rubles) with a rather large and powerful emitter. According to the manufacturer, the device protects against rodents an area of up to 750 square meters. m., like other powerful tools powered by the network.
Among other devices, the Banzai KQ-200A stands out for its large mass and the fact that according to the test results it did not really correspond to the declared characteristics. In particular, instead of a 360 ° ultrasound radiation pattern, he showed a real 27 ° diagram, and, in fact, scared away rodents from an area of only 20 square meters. m. Nevertheless, the deterrence really occurred, and therefore the device can be recognized to one degree or another effective.
A few words about inexpensive rat and mouse repellers
You may have noticed that all the “first tier” repellers are rather heavy and bulky products that work only from the network. And this is not surprising: in order to generate powerful ultrasound, a powerful emitter and corresponding energy costs are required. It will be problematic to manage with batteries and a small radiator that would fit, for example, in a case the size of a mobile phone.
But compact inexpensive rodent repellers, working on a pair of batteries, often do not demonstrate high efficiency. Sometimes they try to demonstrate their effectiveness in a video where they put the repeller directly into a cage with a domestic rat and show: “Well, they say, watch the mad animal rushing around. It looks convincing, but if the same repeller is placed about five meters from the cage, then you can no longer be sure that the animal will pay attention to it at all.
Therefore, in a separate category, you can take all the inexpensive "pocket" repellers, including autonomous ones - on batteries and accumulators. Among them:
- Pest Reject - a typical brainchild of Chinese industry (which supposedly effectively scares away insects and rodents);
- All Grads - Grad A-500 UZ, Grad A-1000;
- Remiling Terminator;
- Buran;
- Typhoon;
- Riddex.
And many others. Often, consumers initially do not really believe in the effectiveness of these devices and buy them for the sake of experiment. The rat is scared away - it will be good. They will not be scared away - in principle, the money spent on them will not be a pity, because they are inexpensive. By the way, the developers of some similar products are counting precisely on this approach of buyers ...
Feedback
“Advise, please, a good repeller of mice, otherwise there are already no forces. My husband bought some seashell for 450 rubles, we were tormented, tormented with this ultra-repeller, then we put it in one corner, then in another, but the mice still run around the house. I feel that this should not be so, since he is a repeller, then he should repel. And we don’t scare anyone ... "
Alena, Moscow
In conclusion, it is worth noting that even expensive models of ultrasonic repellers in practice do not always give the necessary effect - in rare cases, individual rodents still ignore the device (either initially or get used to it over time). And the point here is not even the repeller, but the rats and mice themselves - in any animal population there may be bolder individuals who in search of food will overcome the discomfort created by ultrasound. In such cases, it is useful to combine the use of an ultrasonic repeller with traditional means of rats and mice - traps or poison.
If you have personal experience in fighting rats or mice with the help of any scarers - be sure to share the information by leaving a review at the bottom of this page. Perhaps he will help make the right decision for those people who are in a similar situation.

What are the remedies for rodents and what is better to use - poison or repeller?
I bought a Pest Reject electromagnetic mouse repeller. It has been a month already, and the mice both ran and ran. Even poisoned grain does not help. They clean it from the coating of poison, and then gnaw.
